Did you know historical evidence of soup dates all the way back to 20,000 B.C.? It wasn’t until waterproof containers made of clay came about that boiling water became a common method of cooking. Chalk that one up to random facts you learned because January is National Soup Month!

Today, soup is about as commonplace as the water used to make it and while it might be easy to spring for the instant stuff in your kitchen cupboard, we suggest ordering a cup (or bowl) from one (or all) of these great places in metro Detroit.

Mudgie’s Deli

Mudgie’s Deli in Corktown has been attracting people of all walks of life with its signature deli sandwiches and, you guessed it, soup. Like a lot of the fine establishments on this list, Mudgie’s has a daily rotation of soups, so keep your eye on their Facebook and Twitter pages to get the skinny on today’s specials. What sets Mudgie’s apart from some of the other places you see below is that it has also has a bar full of cocktails, spirits and beer that will go nicely with a soup and sandwich/salad combo.

The Fly Trap

A staple of downtown Ferndale, The Fly Trap features an exquisite menu of breakfast and lunch offerings. As for what you can expect as a purveyor of soup, The Fly Trap has a different soup, like Vietnamese chicken & rice, on the menu every day. Just ask your server what deliciousness they have prepared today and be ready to fork spoon over $3 for a cup or $4 for a bowl.

Russell St. Deli

Russell St. Deli has made a name for itself in Detroit as a high-priority stop when it comes to sandwiches. But, often overlooked are Russell St. Deli’s great selection of vegetarian, vegan and meat soups, rotating daily. Check out its website every day to see a list of new soups for the day. Varieties like potato dill, Moroccan chickpea and Cuban black bean soup are sure to whet your appetite. A cup will set you back $3.95, while a bowl is $9.50.

Selden Standard

In an effort to keep things fresh (in more than one sense of the word), Selden Standard’s menu is ever changing with the passing of the seasons. A Michigander would take that to mean the menu changes daily, but — rest easy — Selden Standard’s menu isn’t as sporadic as Michigan weather. The restaurant takes pride in getting its ingredients from local producers, such as Anthology Coffee, Golden Stock Farms and Salomon Gardens. When it comes to soup, you can get a cup for $5 or a bowl for $9. Just ask, “What’s the soup du jour?”
